FST Clubs Semester 1 2024/25 Wrap-Up: What You Missed!

From scientific outreach to social impact, FST clubs had an eventful semester! Here’s a look back at some of the most exciting moments.

🧮 UWI Actuarial Society

This year, the UWI Actuarial Society commemorated Breast Cancer Awareness by having Jodie Nephew, a representative from Jamaica Reach to Recovery Limited, share her inspiring journey from diagnosis to being cancer-free. Her story was deeply moving and educational, offering invaluable insights into resilience and early detection.

💖 To further support the cause, members participated in the ICWI Pink Run, joining hundreds in a powerful show of unity. The experience was both empowering and uplifting as students ran together to advocate for breast cancer survivors.

🧪 American Chemical Society Jamaica Chapter

The ACS Jamaica Chapter took science beyond the classroom, bringing chemistry to life for students at Lister Mair Gilby High School for the Deaf.

🌞 Using ACS Program-in-a-Box, members explored cyanotype printing, a special technique that produces blue-tinted images using sunlight exposure, as part of National Chemistry Week. This hands-on experiment allowed students to engage with chemistry in a creative and interactive way, demonstrating how science can be both fun and accessible.

🦠 American Society UWI Chapter / Microbiology Club for Microbiology (ASM)

The ASM UWI Chapter / Microbiology Club made a strong impact at the

2024 FST Club Expo.

🔬 The booth gave students a closer look into the world of microbiology, sparking curiosity and engagement. With fun activities and demonstrations, the club successfully showcased microbiology’s role in everyday life while encouraging students to get involved.

🧬 UWI Mona Chemical Society (U.M.C.S)

On November 12, 2024, the UWI Mona Chemical Society (U.M.C.S.) was invited to Wolmer’s Boys’ School to participate in their first-ever Chemistry Week.

Club members led an engaging chemistry experiment, allowing students to explore scientific concepts first-hand. The event highlighted the importance of STEM engagement and provided students with a valuable hands-on learning experience.

🎬 That’s a Wrap!

Semester 1 was filled with innovation, outreach, and community impact across FST clubs. From scientific experiments to social advocacy, these clubs continue to create meaningful experiences for students and the wider community.

✨ Stay tuned for more club activities in Semester 2!
